This song is about the tension I always felt was in the background, for both me and those around me, between the joy of hedonism and careless encounters, and the quest to find someone to make a deeper connection with.

As it appeared to me at least, I could see a little sadness in the faces of those people drifting around the cold street outside the club, at the end of the night. I felt it was more than just that the party was over - it was that the party was ultimately about making a connection that would endure after they turned on the white lights and drove us all outside. In that sense, the end of the club night is a kind of defeat.

As a result, clubbing — drinking, dancing, careless connections made and lost — has always felt like both a joyous and also a painful experience for those who try it.
