Although I had just written an album to try and capture something about the 15 years I lived in America ("An Impressive Romance"), I knew that I had missed out the most important American experience of all: The first night I spent in America with my now wife, in May 1998.

For such a huge moment in my life, I wanted to make a single long track running through the story of that night, from seeing Jill after months apart, and then, heavy with jet lag, wandering the dark house she lived in, in a dreamstate, confronting doubts and fears, both real and imagined.

To try and match the surreal quality of the experience on so many levels, I decided the production should throw out most of my usual song construction models, and be a labyrinthine set of phrases, tone and instruments, stitched together and jumping back and forward across the 25 minute track. This way, I hoped, I could make some kind of statement of the depth and complexity of the relationship that followed.
