about

Eject is about a very clear recollection I have of a seminal moment in my developing obsession with music. It was when I passed over my personal stereo headphones to my friend Steven, in school, so I could let him listen to a song by The Smashing Pumpkins, from Siamese Dream, for the first time.

I can still see his shocked face when, about 30 seconds in, the unparalleled, annihilating, square wall of distortion kicked in. In that second he and I were completely aligned: in awe of how on earth this sound could exist, and swallow us whole. It was a joyous moment.

The song then turns to the time after, when Steven (who I haven’t seen in perhaps 30 years) moved off to other interests, another life altogether, while I seemed endlessly hooked on what music could be and do, and even more what tone is (over melody alone).

Eject is not about any sadness that Steven and I only collided in music for a moment though - it’s but more about the fantastic fact that we able to have that moment together.

lyrics

A LITTLE SHUDDER WHEN IT BEGINS/
SO I CAN FEEL IT THROUGH MY SKIN/
A LITTLE SHUDDER WHEN IT BEGINS/
SO WE CAN LAUGH AT STRIKING STRINGS/

EJECT (X4)

YOU FORGOT THAT WE LOVED THE SOUND OF THAT BLACK GUITAR/
IT WAS EASY TO WALK AWAY FROM THAT PIERCING BAR/
SO DON’T SPENT THOSE YEARS UNTIL/

EJECT (X4)

SO DON’T SPENT THOSE YEARS UNTIL/
A SQUARE WAVE EFFACES/
