Nice 04:18
Nice There's hope in every dawn and every walk we take together/ So walk and we can stop to see the lazy people gather/ I'll smile and in your hazy recollections see my picture/ The sun is only slight and as the city stirs I whisper/ Soothe my shaken heart/ Those days are so long gone that it's just faith that I can muster/ Come grasp it so it throws us back to glimpses of the summer/ Indifferent to me then but you could not resist the future/ We let those fantasies carry us further from my fear/ Soothe my shaken heart/ See her and I know I'm loved so/ Wheel away from shadows/ See her and I know I'm loved so/ Time enough to let go/
2.
Manchester 03:12
Manchester In the long sun, you can play in the street til the dark comes/ You are safe son, you are safe son, you are safe son/ You make up worlds that you rule then, you break them/ You don't look past the horizon, more fool them/ Though you don't fear isolation, you'll need a friend/ As the days passed, hours even, slow/ Were never bare without you/ Then an instant, 30 yrs ago/ I seemed to know how much I'd missed you/ And it's still so, it's careless where we're thrown/ I'm just left words where once I sat with you/ On the waste ground by your house/ We would lay down/ Take the rain and hold it out/ To the night time/ What I said I don't recall/ But I meant it/ We would wait for one chance to be/ Less innocent/ And we couldn't stop the night/ After hours an early light came/ We wouldn't be as close again/ Now we drift and sway great friend/ You make up worlds that you rule then, you break them/ You don't look past the horizon, more fool them/ Though you don't fear isolation, you'll need a friend/ Those times in the streets feel content, they are frozen/
3.
Knutsford 03:11
Knutsford Let's run again, in those flat fields/ We trip we stumble, heady in the sunshine/ We're young again, in those flat fields/ Get the fallow soil under our fingernails/ Scratch and claw/ And struggle to recall/ All too beautiful to believe/ But it was real/ All those years/ A few pictures still/ Your caustic grin/ A moment you could win/ Bent double thin/ And crawling from your skin/ I scratch and claw/ And struggle to recall/ Dear friend/ You're far away/ So I suspend/ This hazy day together/ Don't crack my smile/ Don't brake my stride/ We're so alike/ There's risks to dream and be smothered/ So run free in those flat fields/ Until you're out of site/
4.
Liverpool 04:26
Liverpool I'll fly by those nets, to a space without wanting/ And for now no regrets, in this city you're nothing/ And I wonder to see it rising/ Look around and there's no horizon/ Though this city is dark and frozen/ So we wade in together, and hold on/ We'll fly by those nets, to a space without wanting/ We can shake off regrets, in a moment of rebellion/ It felt passionate/ In our frenzy/ We were feverous/ In my fury/ And my fury/ Exorcised your weight/ We'll fly by those nets, to a space without wanting/ We will give up regrets, in this city you're nothing/ When we part as we came, I tell you/ There's no harm in your pain, to burn through/ I'd no voice left to shout, you're not true/ I'm so glad of it now.
5.
Leeds 03:15
Leeds You are not the one that I will see as I am falling over/ The crowded streets are reeling as they drop their nervous shelter/ Now you’re with friends Each of us will love the other swimming in the misty night/ We’re jumping deep in into the filthy city’s yellow light/ Surrounded by fighting/ Soaked and smiling/ None of us are honest, but careless so we won’t believe/ They’ll be an end to it, they’ll be any end to it/ Our dizzy control is hungry for more debauchery, debauchery, debauchery/ (But you) Fumble when you tell me why x3/ We both lie (NO)/ Don’t let me convince you, it’s not true/ Those nights we could hide what we knew/ And play the fool/ None of us are honest, I don’t know when you’ll find me out/ There’s nothing past this, there’s nothing past this/ We sit together, we watch the city arm in arm/ And we can hold that, and we can hold that/ Farewell that night/
6.
Bristol 05:07
Bristol After the party's over, it's time to come home/ After the party's over, it's time to come home/ Each fumble, roll and spin, they weren't empty then/ I treasured that thoughtless din, insignificant/ But now that I'm not beholden, the days float/ Cast off and row the ocean, you sink if you don't/ The torrents you bring my dear, they are coming near/ I'm waving not drowning here, though I'm full of fear/ I'm scared of the deep below, more scared if the water's shallow/ x4 Rootless when you float/ x6 We dance as we drift on the ocean/

about

City Songs is the third EP in the series about my “foundations”, and this time, instead of people, I turned to place - the six places I had lived before I moved to America in 2000.

This EP is in chronological order, starting where I was born, in Nice, then through growing up (Manchester), school (Knutsford), uni (Liverpool and Leeds), and ending when I got engaged, while living with my now wife, in Bristol.

This was the first time I tried to bind an EP together with call backs and references to previous moments (which grew and grew in my writing, until I ended up writing an EP project that was all one single narrative song (Long night of love’s life)).

This EP kept up the trend of steadily more and more polished production. It was also a bit more of a collaborative process, working with others on some aspects of both recording and production, particularly with my friend Rod McFarlane (on drums and co-mixing).

These songs and poems confront and then re-inscribing adverse experiences, to try to find acceptance, solace, or even glimpses of joy in dark times.
